Wellensteyn's roots go back to the German Wuttke family in 1940s Hamburg. The family originally traded in welding wire, then produced special equipment for exploring the harsh North Sea, such as sand samplers and plankton nets. That was when they recognised the need for extremely durable, weatherproof clothing, so Adolf Wuttke's company developed these rugged outerwear pieces for people working in the harshest conditions. The parkas, inspired by the maritime and shipyard environment, were made of waxed sailcloth that withstood extreme weather while keeping their wearers warm and safe.
